INDUSTRY VOICES

What the SCOTUS broker ruling means for carriers

After the Supreme Court's decision in the suit against C.H. Robinson, the industry is digesting what this means for the entire freight trucking sector.

Duane Morris Partner Harry Byrne said motor carriers "should expect a greater focus on their safety ratings and compliance history.” He also said it's possible in the short term that shippers will go with larger, well-known trucking companies to avoid any possible negligence.

Why this matters: If fleet owners haven't already prioritized their safety and compliance scores, now is the time. For the carriers that have been paying attention to these important metrics all along, they should continue to be in good standing with shippers and brokers. But there could be an even greater focus on thorough vetting. (Trucking Dive)

ROAD REPORT

DIESEL
Diesel prices squeeze California truckers

California has some of the highest fuel prices in the nation, and truckers in the state are feeling the pinch as diesel stays elevated. When one small business owner recently filled up his truck, it cost him more than $700. Still, he's committed to sticking with the industry.

Why this matters: Eventually, diesel prices will come back down again. It's simply a question of when and how much. Fleet owners, in the meantime, have to make quick decisions about which loads to take, how to share costs with customers and how they run their business as efficiently as possible. (ABC7)
