INDUSTRY VOICES

Why trucking CEOs need both strategy and culture

Strategy and culture aren't mutually exclusive. Alex Brueckmann of Brueckmann Strategy Consultants writes that the two must go hand in hand, and it's important for company leaders and CEOs to understand that corporate strategy doesn't work when they haven't built a culture to deliver on that strategy.

As Brueckmann puts it: "You can’t execute a high-performance strategy inside a low-trust culture."

Why this matters: Trucking executives can no longer pass the buck to HR when it comes to driver retention or turnover problems. They have to take ownership of a strategy, execute it and ensure a culture of safety and trust pervades the entire fleet organization.

ROAD REPORT

Logistics budgets dented by rising fuel costs

If you feel like diesel costs make up a growing part of your balance sheet, you're not alone. More than half of logistics professionals surveyed last month said they were spending more than a fifth of their operating budgets on fuel. The result is shifting priorities for many fleets, away from efforts like driver retention and toward things like managing financial pressures.

Why this matters: Oil prices are out of trucking executives' control, but what they can do is take the wheel of any costs within their purview. Operational efficiency, preventative maintenance and driver retention become even more important during times like these, when external costs are taking a large bite out of budgets. (Tech.co)

Executives at C.H. Robinson are crediting AI technology as one of the factors behind the logistics provider's recent market share gains. With AI, the company can respond more quickly to more quotes, and that has led to more business.

Why this matters: AI is proving its worth in the trucking industry. If the technology can directly lead to faster operations and more business, it may be easy for logistics leaders to make the business case and prove ROI. (Trucking Dive)
